KTU ALERTS · · 5 min read

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University or KTU is one of the renowned universities in Kerala. There are more than 150 institutions under the KTU, and more than 2 lakh students are currently studying under it. But many of them still don't know what is or how to calculate the SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) or CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). So here it says everything you need to know about it. This is the ultimate guide on KTU SGPA or KTU CGPA calculation you need in 2024. This is for the latest scheme that is KTU 2019 scheme.

What is SGPA?

SGPA, or Semester Grade Point Average, is like a report card for your college semester. It shows how well you did in your classes during that specific term. To figure it out, you take the grades you got in each subject, turn them into points, and then average them out. It's a way to see how you're doing in college right now, without waiting until you finish your whole degree.

The points are given by the university, it may change from university to university. In your result you may have seen have only grades covering from S, A+, A to F etc. These grades can be converted to points where the maximum is 10 which is for S and least is 0 for F. You can see the grade to points below

GradePointsInference of grade
S1090% and above
A+985% and above but less than 90%
A8.580% and above but less than 85%
B+875% and above but less than 80%
B7.570% and above but less than 75%
C+765% and above but less than 70%
C6.560% and above but less than 65%
D650% and above but less than 60%
P5.545% and above but less than 50%
F0Less than 45%
FE0Failed due to eligibility criteria
I0Course Incomplete
AB0Absent or didn't attempt exam
R0Debarred by University or College

We need this to calculate the SGPA. This is for 2019 scheme and if new scheme comes out it may change according to that.

How to calculate SGPA?

Here is the formula for the SGPA calculation, for the grade point we use the above table to convert grade to point and then we calculate.

$$\text{SGPA} = \frac{\sum (\text{Grade Points} \times \text{Credit})}{\sum \text{Credit}}$$

Example

Given:

Calculation:

  1. Course 1: 10 points × 3 credits = 30

  2. Course 2: 8 points ×4 credits = 32

  3. Course 3: 6 points × 2 credit = 12

$$\text{SGPA} = \frac{74}{9} \approx 8.22$$

So, the SGPA is approximately 8.22.

What is CGPA?

CGPA, or Cumulative Grade Point Average, is a measure of a student's overall academic performance across all semesters. It is calculated by taking the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses a student has taken throughout their academic program. Unlike SGPA, which is specific to a single semester, CGPA provides a comprehensive view of a student's performance over their entire course of study.

How to calculate SGPA?

To calculate CGPA, you use the following formula:

$$\text{CGPA} = \frac{\sum (\text{SGPA} \times \text{Semester Credits})}{\sum \text{Semester Credits}}$$

This means you multiply the SGPA of each semester by the total credits of that semester, sum these values, and then divide by the total number of credits across all semesters. This gives you the average performance of the student over their entire academic program.

Example

Suppose there is 5 semesters that we need to calculate CGPA for. Here is an example calculation:

Given:

Calculation:

  1. Semester 1: 8.0 × 24 = 192

  2. Semester 2: 7.5 × 22 = 165

  3. Semester 3: 8.2 × 23 = 188.6

  4. Semester 4: 7.8 × 21 = 163.8

  5. Semester 5: 8.5 × 25 = 212.5

$$\text{CGPA} = \frac{922.9}{115} \approx 8.02$$

So, the CGPA for the 5 semesters is approximately 8.02.

Conclusion

We have learned how to calculate SGPA and CGPA with example. You may try it yourself or you can use the online SGPA or CGPA calculator like:
